Hermite Functions and Uncertainty Principles for the Fourier and the Windowed Fourier Transforms
We extend an uncertainty principle due to Beurling into a characterization of Hermite functions. More precisely, all functions f on R which may be written as P (x) exp(Ax, x), with A a real symmetric definite positive matrix, are characterized by integrability conditions on the product f(x)f̂(y). We also give the best constant in uncertainty principles of Gelf’and Shilov type. We then obtain sim...
متن کاملPathologies cardiac discrimination using the Fast Fourir Transform (FFT) The short time Fourier transforms (STFT) and the Wigner distribution (WD)
This paper is concerned with a synthesis study of the fast Fourier transform (FFT), the short time Fourier transform (STFT and the Wigner distribution (WD) in analysing the phonocardiogram signal (PCG) or heart cardiac sounds. The FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) can provide a basic understanding of the frequency contents of the heart sounds. The STFT is obtained by calculating the Fourier tran...
متن کاملDiscrete–time Fourier Series and Fourier Transforms
We now start considering discrete–time signals. A discrete–time signal is a function (real or complex valued) whose argument runs over the integers, rather than over the real line. We shall use square brackets, as in x[n], for discrete–time signals and round parentheses, as in x(t), for continuous–time signals. This is the notation used in EECE 359 and EECE 369. Discrete–time signals arise in t...

متن کاملThe Uncertainty Principle for Fourier Transforms on the Real Line
This paper will explore the heuristic principle that a function on the line and its Fourier transform cannot both be concentrated on small sets. We begin with the basic properties of the Fourier transform and show that a function and its Fourier transform cannot both have compact support. From there we prove the Fourier inversion theorem and use this to prove the classical uncertainty principle...
